Today was the deepest, most consistent, bottomless, best snow I have ever skied inbounds anywhere. From 8 am to 4pm, 8 hours straight in the white room. Every single line was over the head, every single one. People in Germany also don’t ski off piste. Not bad for a little ski area in the south of Bavaria, where the base is a mere 800m.
Get on the chairlift early in a US Ski Team jacket, poach a couple of runs under the lift, then before I get everybody in trouble, switch jackets and head up the real mountain for sketchy ridgeline traverse to bottomless pow skiing all day long.
Hooked up with a local who confirmed that it was the best day he had ever seen here and that 4 days ago there was more grass then snow on the mountain. It was nice to have some company so we could go do some adventure skiing, involving a line that he had been hoping to ski and using his summer time navigation knowledge to avoid getting cliffed out and put together a line back to the bottom of the gondola. Beautiful way to end the day.
After a quick, early breakfast buffet and skipping lunch, I haven’t eaten anything interesting all day!
