How to get lost in Havana: Get on a bus.
There’s no schedule or published routes and only a handful of marked stops, you mostly stand on the side of the road and signal the bus. The bus may or may not stop depending on how full it is and apparently tourists aren’t exactly the target market for the public bus. When we arrived at the bus station and inquired about a schedule, we were given a note in English with the address for the tourist transportation center.
But this rabbit hole led us past the closed up national sports complex, near the university and into Vedado which is an ocean front suburb of Havana that’s a little more spread out and way less crazy than the center of town. There is spectacular architecture out here in various states of disrepair and plenty of casas particulares. If we had more time it would be worthwhile to stay out here, if for no other reason then to check out one of the architecture of the restored classical homes.
